Civil rights, social participation and democracy

Increasing authoritarianism and extremism are underway in the world. The fight against corruption – as in other historical moments – is once again captured and is at the center of a dispute between authoritarian forces. All of this in a radical context that opens more opportunities for the setbacks of transparency rights – fertile ground for the expansion of corruption. The poor and, in the case of Brazil, black population are most affected. The current scenario poses risks for the space of activity of organized civil society and for the work of the press, as well as for a growing monitoring of these groups and persecution of whistleblowers. Given this situation, how to ensure civil liberties, free debate of ideas and the anti-corruption agenda be guaranteed? Can innovations in the ways of activism and social control represent a response to new times and block possible setbacks? What do we have to do to ensure that rights can be preserved and that new advances are achieved?
